My Last Day At School

My Last Day At School

by Mrunal Shethiya

Last evening while cleaning my study table, I came a photograph. It was the photo of the farewell function on my last day at school. The photograph reminded me of my last day in the school.

It was 21st of February, and our last day in the school. All the SSC students and the teachers assembled in the central hall for the farewell function. The teachers and the principal occupied the dais while the students were seated in the chairs facing them.

The function started with a prayer. It was followed by speeches by our teachers. They said they were sorry if they had to be strict and had to punish some of us. But it was for our good. Then they gave us some useful advice. Then I rose to speak on behalf of the students. I thanked all the teachers for what they had done for us. I apologized to the teachers for our mischiefs and pranks, and hoped they would forgive us. I wanted to speak more but I could not, as my voice was choked with strong emotions that overcame me. As I glanced through the hall, I found tears in almost all eyes.

Then our headmaster rose to speak. He gave us some useful Instructions about how we should prepare for the examination and write the answers. He stressed the need for discipline, hard work and sincerity for success in any field of life. He said he was proud of us and hoped we would remember our alma mater even after we had left it. He wished us a bright future on behalf of the whole staff.

The speeches were followed by a few items of music, songs and mimicry. Then we were served with light refreshments in the school garden. Just before that we had a group photo of all the SSC students and teachers. It would serve as a memento of the school.

It was now time to say good-bye. We bowed to our teachers and sought their blessings. They blessed us and wished us the best of luck. With tears in our eyes, we said good-bye to all and departed.

The parting was painful. It was the end of a decade of the happiest days of our life. Here we had grown from toddlers into youngsters. We knew nothing when we joined the school. We could only speak. Now when we were leaving we could read and write and we knew a lot about many subjects and the world around.

I had cried on the first day of my school. I did not want to go to school. On my last day in school I also cried, but that day I cried because I did not like to leave the school. The period between the two days was the happiest period of my life.
